RTE 5 / 7 Former NFL player and wife of his former team teammate Jamaica Plain-and-Pale Eagles defensive end Darryl Jelks died in an accident on the highway in Wiscassets, New York, in 2010, according to a family statement released on Thursday.
The statement says the accident happened when Jelts wife, Darryn Jelbs, was traveling on the road in a red Toyota.
Jelns death was ruled an accident and the family has not disclosed the cause of death.
The Associated Press was unable to immediately confirm the cause and the name of the victim.
“He was the best friend to me in the NFL,” Darrym Jelms said in a statement.

Darryll Jelss family spokesperson Chris Lacy told NBC News the family is devastated by Jelstons death and the news of his wife’s death.
“The family is heartbroken for all the families of Darnel and Darryd who were also killed in a tragic accident,” Lacy said.
“All of our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased. “

The Associated News first reported the news on Thursday afternoon.
“I’m not going to lie, I was just so scared,” Jelins wife, who had been a part of the Eagles’ coaching staff since 2011, told NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press.”

In an email to NBC, the team said the accident is being investigated by the NYPD and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Jelms father, former Green Bay Packers defensive end Jelbert Jelmin, is a former teammate of Jelons son, Jarryd, who plays for the Eagles.
Darryl Jr. has been listed as a starting defensive end on the Eagles injury report.
